I made this cake for my husband last night, who absolutely loves German Chocolate Cake. He said this is the best cake he has ever tasted! This recipe came from the November, 1997 issue of Bon Appetit.

Step by step method

  • Make Cake

  • Step 1

    Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • Step 2

    Butter a 13 x 9-inch glass baking dish.

  • Step 3

    Bring water to a simmer in small saucepan.

  • Step 4

    Reduce heat to low.

  • Step 5

    Add chopped chocolate; whisk until smooth.

  • Step 6

    Cool.

  • Step 7

    Sift flour, baking powder and salt into medium bowl.

  • Step 8

    Using electric mixer, beat sugar and butter in large bowl until blended.

  • Step 9

    Beat in yolks one at a time.

  • Step 10

    Beat in cooled chocolate mixture and vanilla.

  • Step 11

    Beat in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.

  • Step 12

    Using clean, dry beaters, beat whites in another bowl until stiff but not dry.

  • Step 13

    Fold into batter in 2 additions.

  • Step 14

    Pour batter into prepared dish.

  • Step 15

    Sprinkle with chocolate chips.

  • Step 16

    Bake until tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 55-60 minutes.

  • Step 17

    Cool cake in pan on rack.

  • Make Frosting

  • Step 1

    Combine first 5 ingredients in heavy saucepan.

  • Step 2

    Whisk over medium-high heat until mixture simmers, thickens and leaves path on back of spoon when finger is drawn across, about 18 minutes.

  • Step 3

    Mix in coconut and pecans.

  • Step 4

    Spread warm frosting over cake.

  • Step 5

    Immediately sprinkle 1/4 cup chocolate chips over.

  • Step 6

    Let stand until frosting sets, about 2 hours.

  • Step 7

    Cut cake into squares and serve.
